Psilocybin and the Menstrual Cycle: A Two-Way Relationship
Written by Dori Lewis, LPC, LMHC, Owner-Operator of Reflective Healing Center and Co-Founder and Clinical Director of Elemental Psychedelics
Have you ever wondered: Can I take psychedelics on my period?
Does the experience differ at different moments in my cycle?
If so, the answer is YES – your menstrual cycle can absolutely influence the way you experience a psychedelic, especially psilocybin mushrooms – and we’ll explain why.
Not only that, but early research and anecdotal evidence indicate that psilocybin may also have an impact on female reproductive systems and conditions such as amenorrhea or pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
If you are a naturally-cycling person interested in psilocybin therapy, it’s a good idea to understand how each phase of your menstrual cycle and the hormones involved could interact with a psychedelic experience.
Rather than seeing menstruation as a nuisance to suppress, it’s possible to work with your biology to deepen the healing you experience with psilocybin and potentially even work through cycle-related issues.
Let’s dive in.
How Your Menstrual Cycle Could Affect Your Psilocybin Journey
While there isn’t much research on the relationship between psilocybin and our cycle, we do know that the hormone estrogen (which fluctuates throughout the menstrual cycle) modulates the serotonin system. We also know that psilocybin – when converted to psilocin – activates the 5-HT2A serotonin receptors, the key psychedelic receptors.
Essentially, psilocybin is plugging into the serotonin system that estrogen is already tuning. This means that your psilocybin experience will differ depending on where you’re at in your cycle.
During high estrogen phases (follicular phase and ovulation), you may experience stronger psychedelic effects, clearer insight, and more vivid visuals due to higher sensitivity of the 5-HT2A receptors. For most of us, this is a time of increased energy, elevated mood, and heightened levels of creativity and social interaction.
In your late luteal or premenstrual phase, when estrogen is lower and progesterone is higher, many of us feel more time alone and slow down. Taking psilocybin during this time may feel more emotionally challenging or heavy. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing if you know how to work with it.
Over the years, I’ve found great benefit from taking mushrooms during my late luteal phase. This allowed me to get more deeply in touch with my emotions and use the journey as an opportunity to release and work through challenging feelings that had been building up over the course of the month.
In fact, connecting with mushrooms in this way gave me a whole new appreciation for my cycle and the pre-menstrual syndrome I was experiencing. I started to reframe my PMS as a magical power that I get to connect with and use to deepen my emotional states.
Then, following menstruation, I could use the surge of energy during my follicular phase as a moment to create change and integrate the insights that came from those deep, darker emotional places.
Could Psilocybin Help Cycle-Related Conditions?
Early research and anecdotal reports suggest this impact may go both ways – not only does our cycle affect our mushroom journey, but psilocybin may impact our cycle and potentially be therapeutic for related conditions.
One study that looked at the cases of three women found that psychedelics may have an impact on menstrual function. One woman with amenorrhea (the absence of menstruation) reported that her period came back following a psilocybin journey. Another found that taking psilocybin potentially caused her period to come earlier than expected.
While we don’t know the exact mechanisms at play here, some hypothesize that psychedelic experiences can reduce stress hormones such as cortisol, leading to greater hormone balance and menstrual regularity.
Meanwhile, this piece of qualitative research on the effects of psilocybin on premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) found that most participants reported improved quality of life and reduced symptoms. The findings note that for participants, the psilocybin journey was part of a wider effort to heal trauma, explore lifestyle changes, and deepen self-knowledge, especially after finding little help through traditional treatment options.
Researchers speculated several potential mechanisms of action that could be leading to symptom improvements, including psilocybin’s interaction with 5-HT2A receptors and the interaction between serotonin and the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis, an endocrine system crucial for menstruation. They also hypothesized that the state of neuroplasticity induced by psilocybin may help alter negative thought and behavior patterns associated with PMDD.
Can I Take Psilocybin Mushrooms While On My Period?
With all of this said, it’s important to remember that the most important factor is how you feel at different moments in your cycle and what you have the energy for. For some people, taking psilocybin during the late luteal phase and menstruation could be profound and transformative. For others, it may feel anxiety-inducing and overwhelming. If you’re like me and feel comfortable in the portal that opens up during the luteal phase and menstruation, it can be an opportunity to explore those deeper emotional states.
If you’re working with a guide or facilitator, make sure to let them know where you’ll be in your cycle on your journey day and what this usually looks like for you. They may adjust dosing or their approach to supporting you during preparation and integration.
Psilocybin and the Menstrual Cycle: Questions to Ask For Journeyers and Practitioners
If you are considering taking psilocybin mushrooms therapeutically and want to time your journey so it’s working with your cycle and not against it, here are some questions to ask yourself:
For journeyers:
At which moment in my cycle do I feel the most emotionally resourced to navigate what may be an intense psychedelic journey?
Which cycle phase feels most appropriate for preparation, and which feels like it would be best suited for integration?
Do I have extreme symptoms of low mood, anxiety, or emotional volatility during my cycle? If so, when do these usually occur?
Do I feel comfortable talking to my facilitator about my menstrual cycle and how it may influence my psilocybin journey?
What is my intention for this journey, and how might it connect to how I feel in each phase of my cycle?
For practitioners:
If you are a psilocybin facilitator, make sure to integrate the following questions in your preparation process with any client who has natural cycles:
What is your relationship with your menstrual cycle? How do you feel during each phase?
Do you have any cycle-related conditions, such as PMDD, irregular cycles, or polycystic ovaries? Do you experience any severe cycle-related mood symptoms?
During which phase would you feel most resourced and ready for a psilocybin journey?
What kind of support does your body and mind need at different moments in your cycle?
Psilocybin as a Tool to Dive Deeper Into Your Natural Rhythms
While research is in its infancy, the potential for cycle- and hormone-aware approaches to psilocybin therapy is huge. This is not just about understanding that there are sex differences in psilocybin’s effects, but that for naturally cycling individuals, the experience can differ from one week to the next depending on hormonal fluctuations.
We hope to see expanded research into treatment protocols that take the menstrual cycle into account and explore psilocybin’s potential in treating cycle-related disorders.

Frequently Asked Questions: Psilocybin and the Menstrual Cycle
Does psilocybin affect your menstrual cycle?
Early research and anecdotal reports suggest that psilocybin may influence the menstrual cycle, but the evidence is still limited. Some individuals have reported changes such as earlier periods or the return of menstruation after absence.
Researchers believe this could be linked to psilocybin’s effects on:
The serotonin system
Stress hormones like cortisol
The hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis
More research is needed before any firm conclusions can be made.
When is the best time in your cycle to take psilocybin?
The “best” time depends on your intention and how your body responds to hormonal changes.
Follicular phase/ovulation (higher estrogen): Often associated with clearer thinking, higher energy, and potentially stronger psychedelic effects
Late luteal phase (premenstrual): Can bring deeper emotional processing, but may feel heavier or more challenging
Rather than a single “best” time, it’s more useful to align your journey with your emotional readiness and goals.
Can psilocybin help with PMS or PMDD?
There is early qualitative research suggesting that psilocybin may help reduce symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), including mood swings and emotional distress.
Participants in small studies reported:
Improved quality of life
Reduced symptom severity
Greater emotional awareness
These effects may be related to increased neuroplasticity and changes in negative thought patterns – but this area is still being studied.
