Psilocybin Therapy in Colorado: What We’ve Learned After 6 Months of Legal Practice
Legal psilocybin therapy became a reality for Coloradoans in 2025. The Natural Medicine Act established a framework for licensed healing centers to provide supervised, therapeutic access to psilocybin under the guidance of licensed facilitators.
This was a landmark moment in the expansion of more accessible psychedelic services, with Colorado being the second state, after Oregon, to create a legal pathway for folks to access psilocybin mushroom therapy.
Reflective Healing became one of the first healing centers in Northern Colorado to start offering psilocybin services in August last year. Over the last six months, we’ve welcomed dozens of individuals in our treatment rooms and expanded our network of affiliated licensed psilocybin facilitators to meet the growing demand.
But we know this is only the beginning. As we continue to learn and expand, we’re taking a moment to reflect on our biggest lessons over the last six months of providing legal psilocybin therapy in our Fort Collins center.
Clients in Ongoing Therapy Have the Deepest Results
When we look at who is taking the most away from psilocybin therapy – who is truly integrating their medicine experience and seeing the biggest change – we notice a clear pattern.
It’s the folks who are already in some kind of therapeutic relationship. The ones who appreciate that a psilocybin journey is not a magic bullet – it’s one moment in a longer journey of healing and personal growth.
Many of our clients are already in a therapeutic relationship with their psilocybin facilitator before they embark on the psychedelic journey. This means they’ve built a foundation of trust and safety with that practitioner before they even talk about psilocybin. When the time for their session comes, they feel confident enough to surrender to the medicine experience with someone who knows their path and can hold space for whatever comes up.
For them, the psilocybin session is an opportunity to keep advancing in their already ongoing process of gaining insight and awareness. It’s not the be-all and end-all. Many of them have already developed the mindfulness skills to navigate the mushroom realm with greater calm and integrate it afterward.
Another subset of folks who’ve been experiencing profound outcomes are those who have been in talk therapy for a long time – particularly for depression – and have reached a point where they feel stuck. They sense that they need to go deeper than talk therapy allows, and psilocybin can provide that.
These folks may have been in therapy for years, and have a good foundation of self-knowledge and where they want to be. They can then build a relationship with one of our facilitators and enter into the psilocybin journey feeling resourced, and come out the other side ready to make a change.
Education is Key as Psilocybin Services Continue to Expand
As more people seek out psilocybin services in Colorado, public education continues to be key. While “magic mushrooms” may have been hitting the headlines on mainstream platforms, there is still a gap between what people think psilocybin therapy is and what is actually involved.
We have noticed in our initial intake process that once some folks found out about the personal investment – in terms of time, energy, and finances – they lose interest. We’re still seeing the misconception that guided psilocybin journeys are a standalone event with little understanding of the support that is required on either side.
At Reflective Healing, we’re dedicated to creating educational content and raising awareness around the importance of preparation and integration. This is not an overnight cure. Real results require real effort.
This blog, which I wrote last year on the importance of patience in psychedelic therapy, is a good place to start if you’re seeking out psilocybin mushroom therapy in Colorado.
We Have More Work to Do to Increase Accessibility
Even with a sliding scale model in place, the cost of psilocybin therapy is still prohibitive for many people. This is not a one-hour therapy session. This is a facilitator sitting with you for six to eight hours, giving you their focus and presence – and they need to be fairly remunerated for the energy that requires. Add to that the costs of renting the space, additional preparation and integration sessions, and the medicine itself.
One way we hope to increase financial accessibility in 2026 is by offering group psilocybin therapy at Reflective Healing. Not only will this bring the price down, but it’s also a beautiful way to experience the healing power of psychedelic mushrooms.
Especially for folks who may struggle with feelings of isolation, group journeys can help establish deep connections and a sense of shared healing and belonging.

The Magic of the Mushrooms Remains in the Legal Model
When advocates started pushing for legal access to psychedelic medicines in Colorado, concerns from underground facilitators emerged around moving toward a regulated model of psychedelic therapy. Would practitioners feel too tightly controlled? Would they still be able to bring in spiritual and ceremonial elements they use in their practice?
Fast-forward a few years, and the reality in Colorado is that, for many, psilocybin journeys held in licensed healing centers still very much offer the magic you might have found in the underground space.
You’re not going into a medical setting and being seen by doctors in white coats. Facilitators in Colorado don’t have to have a clinical license in something like counselling (though many do). They come from different backgrounds and can bring those tools into their practice. This might look like energy work, somatic healing practices, or elements of Indigenous traditions they have studied with.
What’s more, healing centers don’t feel like sterile clinics. Treatment rooms are often adorned with cosy blankets and cushions, artwork on the walls, plants, and ambient lighting – much like you’d find in the underground space.
While we would love to see an expansion of where journeys can be legally held (outdoors, for example), licensed centers offer a safe and comfortable space to explore your inner world with psilocybin. For most people, this kind of setting is perfect for what they need.

The Future of Psilocybin Therapy in Colorado is Taking Shape
As we embark on the next six months of our psilocybin services rollout, we are integrating what we’ve learned so far and envisioning a future of wider access and deeper impact.
In addition to offering group mushroom therapy, we are also planning to launch multi-day retreats for those coming from out-of-state for their psilocybin journey. You don’t have to be a Colorado resident to access these services – and we want to make it as smooth as possible for folks from elsewhere to come and experience psilocybin therapy.
As we zoom out and look at the rollout of legal psychedelic therapy across Colorado, we feel optimistic about the foundation that is being laid. We’re honored to be part of this movement and to help shepherd a new chapter in how we care for mental, emotional, and spiritual health in our communities.

FAQs: Legal Psilocybin Therapy in Colorado
Are psilocybin mushrooms legal in Colorado?
According to Proposition 122: Access to Natural Psychedelic Substances, the possession, growing, sharing, and use of natural substances that contain psilocybin and psilocin is now decriminalized. This new law also allows for the supervised use of psilocybin mushrooms in licensed healing centers by licensed psilocybin facilitators.
Where can I buy psychedelic mushrooms in Colorado?
It is illegal to purchase psychedelic mushrooms in Colorado unless you have the appropriate licensing in the regulated space. You can share, grow, possess, and consume psychedelic mushrooms for personal use within the state, without facing legal consequences.
What can psilocybin therapy help with?
Psilocybin mushroom therapy can help with a range of mental health conditions, including treatment-resistant depression and end-of-life distress. It can also support individuals seeking psychospiritual exploration and deeper existential issues. The clients who see the most profound and sustained results with psilocybin therapy are those who commit to the preparation and integration components of the process and are already on a path of self-discovery, whether through talk therapy or other modalities.
How much does psilocybin therapy cost in Colorado?
Psilocybin therapy costs anything between $1,000 and $3,000 within the regulated model. Many healing centers (such as ours) offer sliding scale pricing depending on your economic situation. This price includes your initial consultation, the psilocybin journey (which can last from six to eight hours and is held in a licensed healing center), and one integration session. Additional preparation and integration sessions with your facilitator will incur an additional cost.
